In 1840, with war and famine breaking out throughout Europe, St Louis was flooded with German, Irish and Italian immigrants. The thriving economy made the area attractive to travelers, who ended up staying in the city instead of continuing further west. During the Civil War, Missouri never seceded from the Union despite being considered a slave state. As a result, St Louis remained largely unscathed by the actual devastation of battle. Still, by the end of the war trade had declined to one-third what it was pre-war. By the outbreak of the First World War, St Louis was the world's largest proucer of beer, shoes, stoves and a host of other things. The city's economic diversity helped St. Louis weather recessions and depressions with relative ease.
