Origin of State's Name: Georgia was named after King George II of England. Georgia was one of the first few provinces under England's British America, and it was the King who granted the charter to create the province.

Capital City: Being the most populated city in the state with 540,922 people, Atlanta is Georgia's capital city. Tennessee and North Carolina borders Georgia to the north, South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Alabama to the west and Florida to the south.

Population: As of 2009, 9,829,211 people populate Georgia. It is the ninth state with the highest population.

Agriculture and Industry: Agriculture in Georgia plays an important role in the local economy. The most important crops grown in the city are the three P's: peanuts, peaches and pecans; cotton; soybeans; corn; cotton and tobacco. The state's pine forests supply a large percent of resins and turpentine to the world. Other major industries in Georgia include manufacturing textiles, paper, food products, transportation equipment, clothing and chemicals.Mining barite and bauxite are also important industries; bauxite is used in aluminum manufacture and barite in rubber and paper products. Georgia is also known for manufacturing marble.

State Bird: The brown thrasher was chosen by school children in 1928 to represent Georgia as the state bird.

State Tree: The live oak or the evergreen oak was approved as Georgia's official state tree on February 25, 1937.

State Flower: The cherokee rose is Georgia's state flower.

State Song: "Georgia on my Mind" is the official state song written by Stuart Gorell and composed by Hoagy Carmichael.
