History:
In 1917, the city of Mesa purchased a utility company, making the city one of the few in the state with its own utilities. Thanks in large to the plants success, funds became available that permitted construction and service projects to be completed during the difficult times of the Great Depression. Some of these projects included improvements to the city such as paved streets, sidewalks and curbs, a hospital and a modern city hall and library. Later, during the early 1940s, Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base were built to provide training for World War II pilots. After the war, many military families would decide to stay, having already settled in to life in Mesa. In the late 1940s, air conditioning came into common use, and tourism became a major industry. The 1950s brought more commerce and industry to the city, including several aerospace companies. Even with the economic growth, until 1960 more than 50 percent of the city's rsidents earned a living through agriculture, farming mainly citrus and cotton. From 1960 to 1990 the city experienced an influx of high technology companies' move into town. Today, Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona and the 46th largest city in the country.

Economy:
Due to its climate, the city of Mesa has become a desirable location for aeronautical industries ranging from manufacturing to educational, and everything in between. One of the city's largest companies, Boeing, maintains a facility at Falcon Field Airport where flight control panels are created, tested and installed in freighters. The city's largest company, TRW Vehicle Safety Systems, Inc., is the subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company and leads the way for Mesa manufacturers. TRM's plant produces vehicle restraint systems and other safety equipment, which is later sold to automakers from around the world. Some of those restraint and safety systems might find their way into the heavy machinery and large vehicles produced by Empire Southwest Machinery in Mesa, where buses and caterpillars are researched and developed. The technology of golf has evolved into a thriving industry in Mesa. And thanks to the city's first-rate golfing, the city's local economy has received a boost from the tourism industry.
