Anchorage, Alaska

Recognized as an All-America City, Anchorage, Alaska is a modern city surrounded by six mountain ranges and warmed by a maritime climate. History:
In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson authorized funds for the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Ship Creek Landing, which was located in Anchorage, was selected as the projects headquarters. Soon a "Tent City" sprang up in the area, and the local population quickly grew to more than 2,000. Optimistic entrepreneurs flocked to the bustling frontier town, bringing with them everything necessary to build a major city. In 1920, the City of Anchorage was incorporated. And over the next six decades, the city would only experience moderate growth. However, the decade of the eighties was a time of development and expansion, thanks to a flood of North Slope oil revenue into the state treasury. Capital projects and an aggressive beautification program drastically increased infrastructure and quality of life. Hilltop Ski Area was established in 1984, which along with the Alyeska Ski Resort and Alpenglow Ski Area, gave residents and visitors three operational skiing reas. By the early 1990s, tourism and recreational activities had become a significant part of the modern Anchorage economy.

Economy:
The U.S. government and the oil industry have been essential to the Anchorage economy in recent years. Working as the state's primary transportation, communications, trade, service and finance center, the City of Anchorage's local economy is driven by oil and gas, the military, transportation and the convention and tourism industry. Anchorage may not be the hub of production for Alaska's large oil reserves, but the city does acts as the administrative center for the industry. With a transportation industry that is the busiest in the state, The Port of Anchorage accounts for delivery of more than 90 percent of the consumer goods arriving in Alaska. The tourism and convention industry, along with the service businesses that sprout up around the industry, are a major contributors to Anchorage's economy.

Tourism:
For the outdoor enthusiast, Anchorage, Alaska offers it all. From boat rides in comfort through Prince William Sound and wild Alaska salmon fishing, to mountain hikes and strolls along Anchorage scenic trails, the city is filled with engaging outdoor activities. For an artistic view of the city, head over to the Alaska Center for the Performing Art. Home to the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Opera and Anchorage Concert Association, this performing arts center provides excellent entertainment in a four-theater venue. For some family fun, check out the Alaska Zoo, located in South Anchorage. This zoo Features a wide variety of arctic and sub-arctic animals in a natural setting. Next, visit the Alaska History Galley for science exhibits, shop and full-service restaurant. Alaska's premier art history and science museum, the Alaska History Gallery offers a unique cultural experience for visitors and residents alike. Finally, opened in May 2010, the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center offers 600 historical bjects never before on exhibit in Alaska. At night, head over to one of the city's many pubs, themed bars and dance halls where you can get drink, have a bite or dance the night away with locals.
