November 12, 2010 - Residents in the city of Pittsburgh pay the lowest monthly bills of major cities nationwide, news that could affect some families'
cross country moving plans.
The credit bureau Experian revealed a list comparing the monthly costs of residents in 25 cities nationwide, showing that those who live in Pittsburgh pay just $763 per month on average monthly expenses, a combination of credit card,
auto and home loan payments. Pittsburgh's average was 16 percent less than the national average of $903 per month and well below the most expensive city on the list, Washington D.C., where residents pay an average $1,285 per month.
Overall, the report showed that Americans are paying less per month on those costs compared to three years ago.
"The trend we're seeing is that consumers have lower payments, indicating both proactive deleveraging by consumers and tighter limits from lenders and certainly consumers are making fewer major purchases such as homes and cars than they were a few years ago," said Michele Raneri, senior director of analytics at Experian.
Though they could enjoy lower monthly costs, it's not a given that residents in Washington, D.C. will be hiring
long distance moving companies and heading to Pittsburgh. Those living in the District of Columbia still enjoy a local jobs market that's better than most nationwide, a reality that has boosted the local housing market, according to RealEstate Business Intelligence.
