Providence, Rhode Island

Providence is not only the capital of Rhode Island but also its most populous city with more than 170,000 inhabitants. History:
Roger Williams became the first settler of the area which is now Providence in June 1636. Williams arrived in Rhode Island after being exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his belief in the separation of church and state. The town began was a fishing and farming village prior to King Philip's War. After being left in ruins by the war, Providence rebuilt itself as a commercial and industrial powerhouse and became one of the first industrialized cities in the United States. Today, the city continues to grow as more and more intrastate and interstate movers find their way to Providence.

Tourism:
Since the early 1990s, Providence has undergone a striking renaissance. Rivers running through downtown were uncovered and developed into a waterfront park that later became the home of the popular WaterFire celebrations. There are also seasonal gondola rides reminiscent of Venice in the rivers of the downtown area.

College Hill is the location of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Both schools are venues for the city's cultural and artistic attractions. The Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the 20th largest museum in the country, features artists such as Andy Warhol, Monet and Picasso.

Roger Williams Park, with its zoo, carousel, vintage casino building, lakes, and Museum of Natural History and Planetarium is another popular tourist destination in Providence. The city is also a shopper's paradise. Providence Place Mall and The Arcade are the two major shopping centers in the area. Providence also offers excellent dining considering that it is home to an Italian community and to Johnson and Wales University, a well-known culinary school.

  • The world's largest bug is on the roof of New England Pest Control in Providence. The "Big Blue Bug" of Providence is a termite, 58-feet-long, which is 928 times actual termite size. It was built at a cost of $20,000, made of steel and fiberglass, and weighs two tons.

  • Songwriter George M. Cohan was born in Providence in 1878. He wrote, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy," and "You're a Grand Old Flag".

  • A recent study by the market-research firm NPD Group Inc. found that the Providence metropolitan area has more doughnut shops per capita than any other region in the United States.
