- For many families, it makes sense to downsize when kids go out to college or retirement is nearing. By following these tips, those moving can make relocating less of a tedious task.
Before packing moving boxes
full of household items, it is important that each person sorts through their belongings to get rid of some things that will clutter the new house. This includes clothing, collectibles and knick-knacks. Doing so ahead of time can even allow those moving to hold a yard sale to earn extra money, while donating what doesn't sell can help others and create a tax write-off.
Families who are used to the extra space may need to trade in larger furniture for smaller pieces so their home doesn't feel crowded. Before moving boxes in, consider ways you can utilize wall space, such as hanging shelves, rather than having a bookshelf or other bulky furniture that can make a home seem smaller. Utilize other storage
spaces, such as cabinets, pantries and attics, to store out of season items.
Marking boxes according to their new destination in the new house can be helpful in making unpacking in tight spaces easier. Those downsizing should use this opportunity to get organized, as being messy in a smaller home may be more noticeable than when doing so in a large, open house.
