Connecticut is commonly known as the Constitution state due to questionable historic data that gives credit to the Planters of Connecticut for writing the first constitution, the Fundamental Orders of 1639/39. The state is also known as the Nutmeg state. Connecticut became the 5th state in Jan 9th 1788.

Origin of state's name: The name Connecticut owes its origins to the Indian word for a "place beside a lone river".

Capital City: The capital city of Connecticut is Hartford and the state is bordered by New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and the Atlantic Ocean. The state also has 619 miles of shoreline.

Population: The state has a population in excess of 3.4 million based on the last census in 2000.

  • Doctor Samuel Higley of Simsbury started the first copper coinage in America in 1737.
  • The first lollipop-making machine opened for business in New Haven in 1908. The Lollipop is name dafter a well known race horse of that time.
  • Connecticut was the first state to issue license plates for cars.
  • Connecticut is home to the first color television (1948). 
  • Wallingford has earned a worldwide reputation for the production of silverware.
  • Noah Webster, the author of the first dictionary was born in Hartford in 1807.
  • Some of the world's most famous cloth is woven in the Stafford textile mills.

Arguable the most famous is George W Bush , US President who was born in New Haven July 6, 1946  Katharine Hepburn, the famous actress and Annie Lebovitz, the well known photographer are also from Connecticut. T. Barnum, the famous showman is also from this great state.
