Los Angeles, California

For decades, Los Angeles has been attracting people to move there because of its sandy beaches, movie starts and mild temperatures -- maybe the city a natural melting pot and keeping Los Angeles movers busy. Los Angeles, California, the county seat of Los Angeles County, is on the western coast of the southern part of the state. The city of Los Angeles means "angels" in the Spanish language. The city is the largest in California and second largest in the U.S., behind New York, as of the 2000 census. Los Angeles has a rich history dating back over 150 years that has created the massive city that exists today. Some of the most notable places in Los Angeles include the Hollywood district, the Disneyland theme park, and the numerous professional sports facilities.

History: The area first came under American control in 1846 when the Mexican settlement was taken over. Previously, the land was under Native American control for many thousands of years. The city was soon after incorporated in 1850. The Southern Pacific railroad arrived in 1876 and connected Los Angeles with the rest of the country. Oil was discovered in the city in 1892 which resulted in explosive growth in future years. Additionally, in 1913, an aqueduct was developed supplying Los Angeles with clean water and the ability to grow further. In the 1920's, the motion picture industry in Los Angeles grew tremendously, and helped make it the world leader it is today. World War II was a boom time for the city as it was a hub for needed war supplies.

This led the city's sprawl to extend further as more people came to the city. The Watts riots of 1965 caused national recognition as 34 people died and $200 million of property damage was caused. In the upcoming decades, the population of Los Angeles continued to grow with an increasingly larger immigrant population, most notably of Asians and Hispanics. A major drug problem, led by cocaine, disrupted the city in the 1980's. In 1992, there were further race riots when four white police offers were acquitted of police brutality on a black man. Additionally, Los Angeles has been subject to many natural disasters, the biggest being a 1994 earthquake causing $25 billion of damage.

Economy: Los Angeles is a major commercial center for the western part of the United States. It is a leader in shipping, finance, fashion, industry, distribution, and communication. Los Angeles was once primarily agricultural, but today they also produce clothing, paper, electronics, toys, textiles, pharmaceuticals, metals, and chemical products. Additional income is received through their tourism business, as well as food, publishing, and oil.

Tourism: Los Angeles boasts a large tourism industry. Visitors can reach the city through the Los Angeles International Airport. Museums include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as well as several others involved in history, science, and movies. Theatres include the Los Angeles Opera and the Centre Theatre Group. Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral is also a big draw because of its architecture and religious significance. Additionally, theme parks, such as Disneyland, and recreational activities, like the Hollywood Park Racetracks add to the tourism in the city. Sporting events are also a major part of the industry with pro sports teams such as the Lakers, Clippers, Kings, Dodgers, and many other professional and collegiate teams.

Land Area: The city of Los Angeles encompasses 469 square miles.
