The area was originally known as Provo Bench when it was incorporated in 1909. Later the name was changed to Orem after Walter C. Orem who was the President of the Salt Lake and Utah Electric Interurban Railroad. The Utah County itself was founded in 1852. At one time the area was also known as Sharon. The name was changed in order to attract investors to the town and make shipping easier for farmers with orchards in the area.

The Happy Valley Film Festival brings a new life to the city and attracts scores of tourists from all over the state. The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival is also very famous and includes numerous side activities and celebrations. Sports are also played with great enthusiasm. The main teams in the area belong to the Utah Valley University who play their home matches at the campus. The city is served by the Salt Lake City International Airport.
