History

Martin de Alcaron founded a mission and presidio in the San Antonio area in 1718. Early on, San Antonio served as the most important settlement in Texas. The area was captured by the Texans in 1835. The Mexicans attacked the Alamo in 1836 and briefly took the city in 1842. The first railroad reached San Antonio in 1877 and the area boomed during this time.

During the 20th century, the area continued to grow and modernize, incorporating industry into the city. San Antonio was one of the fastest growing cities in the second half of the century.
