Tourism:
Memphis International Airport is located six miles from the city. The Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA are the only major sports team of the area, among several smaller professional and collegiate teams. The city is a major tourist spot with Elvis Presley's home, Graceland, being the top attraction. Sun Studios is where Elvis recorded certain songs, as well as other major artists including Johnny Cash and Rufus Thomas. Beale Street is a major blues location within the city where B.B. King used to play in his younger years. Additional attractions in Memphis include Libertyland Amusement Park, the Memphis Children's Museum, Detour Memphis, Lichterman Nature Center, and the Memphis Zoo.

History:
The Chickasaw tribe first inhabited the Memphis area. Hernando De Soto, of Spain, is believed to have been the first European to visit the area. The French later built Fort Prudhomme in the city. The city of Memphis was incorporated in 1826. In 1862, during the Battle of Memphis, Union troops gained control of the city. Starting in 1870, yellow fever hit the area and severely hurt the population for many years following. In 1897, the area hosted the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Memphis was the target of machine politics during the first half of the 20th century. This was mainly driven by E.H. "Boss" Crump.
