Miami, Florida

Number one in Forbes 2008 list of "America's 10 Cleanest Cities," Miami boosts a reputation of having not just picturesque beaches but also clean streets, air, and water. Perhaps this is why the population of Miami is steadily climbing; more and more people are moving to Miami, keeping Miami moving companies busy.

Since 2000, Miami has been growing its population at a rate of 11.5%. There are currently 24 skyscrapers under construction, and Miami's skyline is ranked third in the U.S. by the Almanac of Architecture and Design. With its rich, cosmopolitan culture and tropical climate, Miami is no longer just for touring—plenty choose to live and work in this major financial center.

History:

Native Americans first settled in the Miami region; the area was later claimed for Spain in 1566. Miami was largely uninhabited in the 1800s; Julia Tuttle purchased Miami on July 28, 1896, extending the Florida East Coast Railroad into Miami. The 1920s was a rather tumultuous time; Miami's economy was weakened after the Florida land boom of the 1920s and the 1926 Miami Hurricane.

After WWII, in which the majority of South Florida was converted into military headquarters, several soldiers resided in Miami and became permanent residents. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, from 1896-2006, Miami's population grew from 1700 residents to nearly 2,2 million inhabitants, in just Miami-Dade County alone. This staggering growth gave Miami its nickname, the "Magic City." Miami houses a large Latin American and Caribbean population, and its culture and food is a reflection of its "melting pot."

Tourism:

12 million people annually flock to Miami to visit its famous attractions. A popular filming location, the backdrop of Miami is used on many popular shows. The success of shows such as Nip/Tuck, CSI: Miami, The Golden Girls, and Miami Vice have familiarized Americans across the map with the famous Miami skyline. Miami Beach, a popular beach resort, is where the infamous South Beach is located. Known for its night clubs and bars, South Beach is a focal destination for many tourists. South Beach endured a hurricane in 1926 and has been revitalized in recent years, shedding its image of being a crime-ridden, dangerous, area.

Aside from beaches, other venues of entertainment include the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, (second only to Lincoln Center in NYC as the largest performing arts center in the United States), the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, and the Coconut Grove Playhouse. Some museums located in Miami include, the Frost Art Museum, Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Miami Science Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Cizcaya Museum and Gardens. Two large parks are located in Miami (Bayfront Park and Bicentennial Parks), along with zoos, aquariums, and sprawls of gardens. A major fashion center, Miami hosts Miami Fashion week and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami. Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road Mall are main shopping areas, housing dozens of upscale shops and boutiques.

Climate:

Miami is hot and humid. Located close to the equator, Miami averages 80 º F during the summer and 60 º to 70 º during the winter. From June to November, rain often falls at night.
