History:
Atlanta was originally home to Creek and Cherokee Indians, before they were forced to relocate to the Midwest. The city was named Atlanta in 1845 and incorporated two years later in 1847. The city was a main target of the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1864, General Sherman reached the city and destroyed most of what was left of it. Atlanta was rebuilt after the war and became the major center of commerce and industry that it is today. US Army Soldiers remained in Atlanta until 1888 to assure the city was conforming to Reconstruction mandates. Clark Atlanta University, a black school, was setup soon after. The city was promoted as a new south city that diversified away from slavery and agriculture. Race riots broke out in the city in 1906 and 1915 as social tensions increased in the city. The city was hit hard during the Great Depression and the federal government set up the first housing projects in Atlanta. During World War II, Fort McPherson, became a major center for military training. In 1946, the Center for Disease Control was started in Atlanta. The city was a major place for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s although no major escalations ever brought out and the city was described as being "too busy to hate." Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics where a bombing killed two people and injured many more.
