Charles Town, West Virginia

History:
Groups of traders and surveyors first came to this area in the mid-1760s. One surveyor, Colonel Thomas Bullitt was granted a claim there by the government, and after his death, his brother sold the land to George Clendenin. Clendenin built a fort there, and that in turn brought settlers in 1788.  In 1794, the city was laid out and was officially established. Salt manufacturing was the first industry there. The Civil War saw the end of the salt industry, and new industry started up, namely coal mining, gas and oil. In the years since World War I, the city was home to synthetic material industries, such as rubber. 

Tourism:
The Charles Town Sternwheel Regatta Festival is held for 10 days around Labor Day.  There is the Vidalia Festival in May. The Capitol Complex features a museum, performing arts and film festivals and offers tours of the Governor’s mansion two days a week.  405 Capital Street, formerly the Daniel Boone Hotel, has a 10-story atrium. You can tour glass factories in the area year round. Built in the Greek revival style, the Craik-Patton House was built in 1864 and is open for tours April through October. You can scenic trips on the P. A. Denny, a sternwheel paddle boat. Charleston is home to a symphony orchestra, a chamber music string quartet, a light opera guild, a youth orchestra and the Kanawha Players are the oldest continous community theater group in West Virginia.  There is a ballet that holds three to five ballets a year and not to be missed is the Appalachian Youth Jazz Ballet. The beautiful area is home to golf, hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, fishing and even whitewater rafting and kayaking. The city is filled with unique dining and shopping areas as well.

• Daniel Boone and his family lived briefly in Charleston, until the population grew, and then they moved to Kentucky for more room
