If you are considering moving to Albany, New York, you will be happy to know the city is home to many dedicated and involved residents. With a passion for making Albany a superb place to live and grow, the city offers all of the benefits you would expect from New York's Capital City, as well as local activities that making it a great moving destination.

History:
Following the American Revolution, Albany served as a supply hub for settlers heading west. Albany was declared the capital of New York State in 1797. Banking, iron manufacturing and lumber trading enriched the city's economy during the 19th century, and with the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the creation of the New York Central Railroad in 1853, the city became a significant commercial center as well. By the early 1900s, supplies of iron ore and lumber were dwindling, and Albany's industries declined. At the same time, the state of New York became ever more important in national politics. By the 1980s, government had become the city's chief activity. Albany, despite its dependence on government as its primary economic sector, was affected by the economic downturn of the late 1980s and early 1990s that resulted from a downturn in the high technology sector. Gradually, through increased efforts at economic development and downtown restoration, the city recovered. Today, the City of Albany is the location of a university-based research facility. The facility helps draw high technology leaders to the area and plays a major role in the city's development.

Economy:
State and local governments employ almost a quarter of the Albany area workforce. A network of service industries, especially restaurants and food stores and related businesses, has developed in Albany to serve the needs of government. Area colleges, universities and an extensive healthcare network also play a leading role in the city's economy. The presence of scientific research facilities has stimulated the growth of the high technology industries that are replacing traditional manufacturing industries. The City of Albany is home to a number of manufacturers, producing such items as felt products, sporting goods and beer. The sectors of finance, insurance, and real estate enjoy a strong presence in Albany, which is one of the nation's largest banking cities. Tourists who flock to the region each year also affect the city economically. With all of these amazing opportunities, it's no wonder why Albany vanlines are so busy.
