Kentucky became the 15^th US state on June 1^st, 1792. Kentucky is commonly known as the Bluegrass state due to the abundance of the grass in the sate. The bluegrass has a tiny blue bud which in spring gives fields a bluish color.

Economy – The states economy is driven by horses which the state is famous for, cattle, dairy, corn and wheat. The main industries include coal mining, food processing, cigarette manufacture, chemical, electrical and heavy equipment production. 

State Bird: The state bird is the Cardinal known for its robustness and distinctly colored plumage. The Cardinal is also the state bird for Illinois, North Carolina, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia.

State Flower: The state flower is the "Golden Rod" which gets its name from its long stem which is covered with numerous small bright yellow flowers in the spring. The many different varieties of the Golden Rod grow wildly throughout the state.

State Song: The state song is "My Old Kentucky Home" which is really a love song to the state.

Kentucky has been the home of many famous people including athletes, authors, politicians and actors as well as entertainers. Arguable the most famous native was Abraham Lincoln who was US president from 1861-1865. The most famous athletes is probably "The Champ", Muhammad Ali the boxer. Rosemary Clooney the famous singer and aunt of George Clooney the actor was also a Kentucky native and Diane Sawyer the broadcaster is also a native.
