Denver, Colorado

Denver's known as the "Mile-High City" because it lies exactly 1 mile above sea level. Also mile-high in recent years has been its economic growth, fueled by tech firms that move here, attracted to its mild temperatures and proximity to glitzy ski resorts and mountain retreats and sports.

The city has benefited from its central location in the country - many companies have regional headquarters here, and its large number of federal offices make it the second largest only behind Washington, D.C., keeping local Denver movers busy.

Energy and mining are still important in Denver's economy today, with companies such as EnCana, Halliburton, Smith International, Rio Tinto Group, Newmont Mining, Noble Energy, and Anadarko. However, it's a far cry from the 80s when it was more dependent on oil; Denver is now headquarters to a diverse range of companies, including telecom giant Qwest Communications and Level 3.

History: Denver was founded in 1858 and General Larimer claimed an initial stake of land in the city. The city was soon after incorporated in 1861. Denver was the subject of gold and silver finds in the 1870's and 1880's. As 1900 rolled around, Denver started to become a major metropolitan area. Military bases were developed in the area around World War II. This, and Denver's elevation, eventually contributed to the city having a major smog problem. In the 1970's, the city became a major oil center. This led Denver into a recession when oil prices dropped in the 1980's. The city has boomed again in the 1990's with new industries such as government, international, and tourism all becoming significant parts of the economy. Also, the city has greatly reduced the pollution within the city.

Tourism: Denver boasts a strong tourism industry. The city is known for its resorts, parks, and historical sites. Museums include the Denver Art Museum, the Colorado State Historical Museum, the Denver Museum of Natural History, and the Black American West Museum. Other attractions include the state capitol building, a U.S. Mint, and many newly built sports stadiums. Additionally, Denver has a large parks system that features many mountain ranges in the area. Major sports teams include the baseball Rockies, the football Broncos, the basketball Nuggets, and the hockey Avalanche, among several other smaller collegiate and professional teams. Denver International Airport is 23 miles outside of the city.
