Starbucks, Microsoft, the Space Needle... so many iconic images come to mind when thinking of Seattle. However, the city has much more than this to offer the rain-jacket-wearing visitor, luring many people to move here and keeping local Seattle movers busy.

Economy:
Seattle has a history of great booms followed by usual recessionary periods. In the early years, there was a lumber boom. During the 19th century, a gold boom occurred in the area and a shipbuilding boom took place during the 20th century. Boeing resided in Seattle up until 2001. This heavy reliance on the airspace industry resulted in major economic problems in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The most recent technology boom includes large companies such as Microsoft, Amazon.com, and AT&T Wireless.

Tourism:
Seattle boasts several significant tourist structures. King County International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport are both nearby the city. The space needle is the most popular destination. It was constructed during the 1962 World's Fair. Other popular structures include the Pike Place Market, Smith Tower, the Fremont Toll, the Experience Music Project, and the Seattle Central Library. Popular annual events include the Seattle International Film Festival, Northwest Folk life, and the Bite of Seattle. Sports teams include the baseball Mariners, football Seahawks, and basketball Supersonics, among several other smaller professional and collegiate teams.

History:
The area was first settled in 1851. By 1869, the city of Seattle was incorporated. The name Seattle is from a Native American chief who was known as Chief Seattle. In 1889, the Great Seattle Fire destroyed nearly the entire central business district, but did not take any lives. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909 was a world fair to promote the development of the area. The 1962 Century 21 Exposition was a World's Fair to help revitalize the city of Seattle. In 1990, the city of Seattle hosted the Goodwill Games. The Nisqually Earthquake in 2001 caused a state of emergency, but the damage was fairly limited.

Slogan: Seattle is known as "The City of Flowers" and "The City of Goodwill."
