COLUMBUS, OH                         

Columbus is the state capital of Ohio and is located in the central part of the state. Columbus is one of the fastest growing cities of its size, keeping local Columbus movers busy.

Columbus is a major hub for agriculture, industry, and transportation.  The most commonly manufactured products include aeronautics, engines, textiles, glass, food, and metals.  The city’s economy is largely driven by the government as it is the state capital and the government is the city’s largest employer.  Companies headquartered in the city include Nationwide Insurance, Limited Brands, Worthington Steel, Wendy’s, White Castle, and Cardinal Health.  Other companies with major offices in the city include Honda, Bank One, J.P. Morgan Chase, Budweiser and UPS.  The Greater Columbus Convention Center attracts many events each year driving thousands of people to the city.

History

Columbus was selected as state capital of Ohio in 1812.  The further growth of the city in the coming years was due to the addition of various forms of transportation.  In 1831, a canal connected the city to the Ohio and Erie Canal.  Two years later the National Road reached the city and in 1850 railroads connected to Columbus.  During the Civil War, a major military base was built in the city.  The Ohio Statehouse was completed in 1861 after 22 years of construction and numerous different architects used.     

 Tourism

Columbus consists of numerous historical landmarks and cultural attractions.  Government buildings to visit include the state office building and capital, as well as the state library.  Cultural destinations include the Center of Science and Industry, the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, the American Rose Society, and the centers for the archeological and historical societies of Ohio.  Older places to visit include Fort Hayes, which was built during the Civil War, Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, and several state reservoirs and parks. 

The only major professional sports team is the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL, although several other professional and collegiate teams play in the city.  Port Columbus International Airport is eight miles from the city.
